Department of Mathematics, Tunghai University

Introduction

The Department of Mathematics is dedicated to the teaching and research of all mathematics related fields in the University. It was established in 1970, and offers a Master's degree in Applied Mathematics since 1991. Students can receive a thorough training in mathematics within an excellent environment. They also benefit from a beautiful campus and a stimulating cultural atmosphere and develop a well-rounded vision of life. We have 17 faculty members and 9 teaching assistants a staff of about 27 and are located on the 5th and 6th floors in the Science and Technology Building.

Program Descritption

The goal of this department is to provide a superior academic environment for students who wish to study mathematics, so that they will receive a thorough basic training, and also develop a well-rounded philosophy of life. While maintaining these aims, we also intend to adapt to the rapid changes of technology and society by providing the multi-faceted professional training.

The goal of undergraduate program is to develop students' logical and analytical ability. The gradu-ate program's goals are to apply mathematical theory to various systems including but not limited to control system, dynamical system, and distributed parameter system etc., and to provide the training in computa-tional sciences.

Facilities

We have excellent computing facilities for teaching and research. In addition to the large University network of fast PC clusters and UNIX workstations, current computing facilities include a Linux network, served by several high powered parallel clusters dedicated to research. Each member of staff and graduate students has access to these facilities via their own fast PC or Linux workstation. Most PCs run Linux and/or Windows XP, and are integrated into a local area network. There is also a new Windows XP teach-ing cluster (of 58 PCs) within the department. The computer facilities are maintained by a full-time staff member.

The departmental library is most attractive to all the faculty and students. It owns over 16000 mathematical books and journals. There are 2 computers allowing the user to search for library information instantly. The department has an annual budget for purchasing newly published books to support teaching and research.

The department has are two laboratories: the scientific computing and system analysis laboratories. The former contains 13 workstations and 4 PC-cluster implementing the parallel computation. The later contains the 4 PCs for experiments.
