Traveling Tips
※ You will normally arrive at the Chiang Kai Shek (CKS) International Airport (TPE) in Tao-Yuan, 43 kilometers southwest of the capital, Taipei and 150 kilometers northwest of the capital, Taipei. First of all you could exchange some money to buy your bus ticket and maybe other stuff in the airport. Unlike some other Asian countries, the exchange rate at the airport is not noticeably higher than in any other bank in Taiwan. If you prefer to wait with changing more, that is OK too. |

(1) From the CKS International Airport to Tai-Chung |

Please check the information in the web site CKS international airport. You will find ticket windows selling bus tickets to various destinations in arrival terminals. The tickets have departure time and seat numbers marked, so you will have to check what time your bus leaves, since it won't necessarily be the next one. The one-way fare is about NT$250 and the trip takes about 2-3 hours, depending on the traffic conditions. When the bus arrives, the bus driver may want to put the luggage in a different compartment, depending on the destination bus stop. If so, choose Chao-Ma, which is the closest to the university or hotels. When boarding the bus, ask the driver to tell you when to get off, because some of them will shout the name of the station they are approaching, while others don't bother telling whether and where they are about to stop. Be sure to keep the ticket stub, because sometimes you will have to hand it back to the driver when you get off the bus.
On December 13 and 14, at airport we will have students to guide you the way to the bus terminal (United Highway Bus is suggested), and provide any help if necessary.

It is way expensive to take a taxi than to take a bus. On average it would cost you more than $NT 2500 to take a taxi directly from airport to the Tunghai University or other regions in Taichung.

When you arrive at the Chao-Ma bus stop, chances are very big that you will be swarmed by taxi drivers who want to cash in on unwary traveler. Big suitcases, lots of luggage and a bewildered expression are obviously signs of extra income. All taxis in Taiwan are yellow, to be more visible and uniform. The only way to tell a real taxi from a possible rip-off, is to have a quick look at the license plate: it should be two red letters and four numbers on a white background, whereas all regular cars have black numbers on a white background. Don't try to negotiate a price with a cabbie who doesn't want to use his meter; insist on using the meter, and if he's not willing, walk away and take another cab; there are plenty of them.
